Building Strength After 40: How to Train Smarter, Not Harder
Sarah

When you hit your 40s, training starts to feel different. The weights seem heavier, recovery takes longer, and sometimes you wonder if you’re doing something wrong, but the truth is, your body’s just changing, and your training needs to change with it.

Here’s what I tell every client over 40 who walks through the door: you don’t need to train harder, you need to train smarter.

That means focusing on what really matters by building strength that supports your life, keeps you mobile, and protects you from injuries. Forget the fancy exercises you see online; it’s about mastering the basics. Squats, deadlifts, presses all done properly, with the right guidance, and with recovery built in.

After 40, muscle loss (sarcopenia) starts to kick in faster than you’d like, but the good news is, resistance training literally reverses that process. You can absolutely get stronger, leaner, and more energised. You just need to do it with intention.

The biggest mistake people make at this stage is training like they did in their 20s. You don’t bounce back the same way, and that’s okay. Focus on recovery, sleep, nutrition, and mobility just as much as your lifts.

I’ve worked with plenty of clients in their 40s, 50s, even 60s who’ve completely transformed their strength and confidence, not because they trained harder, but because they trained smarter.

If that’s something you want to start focusing on, come and have a chat with us at Eley Fitness. We’ll build a plan that fits your body, your goals, and your lifestyle.

No ego, no nonsense, just real progress.
